Blackwood Desk and Chair
Woodworker: Tony Kenway
In all his furniture Kenway saws out the curved parts rather than steam-bending or laminating them. This often requires very thick stock. Sawing out the top and bottom rails on either end of this desk, for instance, required stock four or five inches thick. That might seem wasteful of material, but Kenway uses wood that is highly figured and therefore full of defects. With some creative bandsawing he can cut around knots and splits, making good use of the material.
