Bombe-style Desk
Woodworker: Jonathan McLean
This reproduction of an 18th-century Massachusetts bombe desk was crafted by McLean between commissioned projects. McLean began his design with full-scale drawings that were done by scaling a photograph of an original. McLean lowered the writing surface from 34 in. to 32-3/8 in. and changed the drawers to protrude 1/4 in. farther than the sides. These adjustments accentuate the serpentine shape of the desk. The desk is made from mahogany, poplar, and brass. It has a linseed oil and French-polish finish.
