CD Cabinet Featuring Insect Marquetry
Woodworker: Greg ZallWhile the overall form of this CD cabinet (25 in. deep by 16 in. wide by 54 in. tall) was designed by Bill Bondy and Cecily Ng of Starkweather Bondy Architecture in Oakland, Calif., Zall was given free rein with the proportions, wood, and patterns. Although very experienced with marquetry, Zall says it “can be cliché”—with the same subject matter seen over and over. So he chose an unusual subject, insects, and he placed them in an atypical way. Each insect is set in a circle on a square drawer front, and often stretches a wing, a leg, or antennae beyond the round border. Zall made the grain of the shop-sawn cypress veneer wrap around the case and flow vertically on the drawer fronts. The finish is lacquer.
