Charleston Chest of Drawers Reproduction
Woodworker: Terry R. Candee
Candee’s chest of drawers is a reproduction of a 1775 piece he saw in The Furniture of Charleston, 1680-1820, by Bradford L. Rauschenberg and John Bivins Jr. The chest is made of Honduras mahogany, with crotch-mahogany veneer on the drawers, secondary woods of oak and maple, and 80 ft. of satinwood stringing. To finish the piece, Candee stained it with potassium dichromate, filled the grain, sealed it with garnet shellac, and top-coated it with lacquer.
