Brown concentrated on the back of the chair when designing since desk chairs are mostly seen from behind. He made the slats on the back of the chair flexible using oversize mortises in the crest rail. This allows them to move so they can support the lower back. The chair is made from cherry and finished with an oil and varnish mixture.
