Chippendale-style Highboy
Woodworker: David S. Beach
Beach built this Chippendale-style highboy working from just two photographs that appear in Southern Furniture 1680-1830: The Colonial Williamsburg Collection (Harry N. Abrams Inc., 1997). Made of black walnut as a primary wood and maple and poplar as secondary woods, the piece incorporates all of the traditional furniture elements: hand-cut dovetails, carvings, and turnings. Each of the drawers has cock beading and a half-mortise lock with a brass escutcheon. The finish is orange and blond shellac and wax.
