Chippendale Tea Table
Woodworker: Gerald Curry
Curry based this piece on several tea tables made by the Townsend/Goddard craftsmen of Newport, Rhode Island. He points out that unlike a lot of period furniture he has examined, Townsend/Goddard pieces are as impressive in their craftsmanship on the inside and underside as on the outside. Although Curry followed the originals in most details, he deviated where necessary to accommodate wood movement; in this piece, for instance, the molding around the top is integral rather than applied.
