This fireplace mantel by Mario Rodriguez is a modern adaptation of classical elements. Plinth blocks support pilasters, which in turn support the wide horizontal frieze board. Separating those elements are thin moldings made with a router from solid walnut. Atop the frieze board, a wide cornice molding supports the mantel shelf and creates a smooth transition from vertical to horizontal. The mantel’s basic design can be varied to suit many other architectural styles.
