Barrett made this cocobolo coffin smoother to be awarded as first prize in the Ontario Provincial Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest, which recognizes the top carpenter’s apprentice in the province. The 1-1/8-in.-thick handle—modeled after the handle on his great-grandfather’s Mathieson jack plane—is mortised into the body. The finish is boiled linseed oil and wax.
