Dunlap-style Secretary
Woodworker: Loran Smith
When U.S. Senator Judd Gregg (Republican. New Hampshire) commissioned Smith to build this secretary, he had a few requirements. The desk was to be built in the Dunlap style, instantly recognizable for its ties to New Hampshire; it was to be constructed of curly maple, with ball-and-claw feet and a carved state seal; and it was to have “lots of character.” The latter was up to Smith, who incorporated eight fan carvings, flowered ogee moldings, and an amphitheater-style gallery, complete with a hidden drawer. The piece is finished with hand-brushed varnish.
