Eliel Saarinen-Style Chair

Vejdi built this piece based on an Eliel Saarinen-designed chair in Home Furniture #6. The original gets its stripes from black paint, but Vejdi wanted to use inlay. Later, he learned that Saarinen originally planned on inlay, but it was vetoed by the furniture-maker who said it was impossible to do on the curve of the chairs. After figuring out how to add this surface decoration, Vejdi wrote “I feel, not only a sense of personal accomplishment, but also that Saarinen’s wish has been completed.”
