Floating Desk and Cabinet
Woodworker: Richard Kautto
Defying gravity This American cherry and Swedish maple desk (17 in. deep by 48 in. wide by 44 in. tall) was Kautto’s pre-masterpiece project at Capellagården, a fine craft school in Sweden. He wanted to make a laptop workspace with a modern design and simple lines. So he mounted the desk and cabinet to the wall to give it a clean, floating appearance. The finish is Osmo Polyx-Oil.
Holding the weight Of course Kautto had to consider the weight of a fully loaded unit when he decided to anchor it to the wall. He secured the cabinet to the desk with bolts with brass head covers. Then he screwed the cabinet section to the wall in four places and the desk at three points.
