Friends of a Feather
Woodworker: Jacques Vesery
Feathers figure prominently in Vesery’s current work. On the eggs, which were turned from boxwood, he did the rough shaping of the feathers with a rotary grinding tool and did the detail work with a fine-tipped burning tool. He conceived the nest-like platter when he decided he needed a base for the feathered egg. (Click on thumbnail image below to view platter.) He turned the platter from Swiss pear (11 in. dia. by 2 in. tall) and created the twigs with a burning tool. The birds-eye maple rim, rabbeted on the underside, was turned separately and glued to the platter. The egg can be moved, but the more fragile shell fragment is pinned and glued to the platter.
