Woodworker: Richard Chill CottJapanese gardens and tatami mats were the inspiration for Chill Cott’s mahogany table (60 in. square by 30 in. tall). The tabletop layout reflects the rules for arrangement and size of tatami. These mats are always twice as long as they are wide, and according to tradition, can be laid out auspiciously or inauspiciously. To avoid an inauspicious layout that is said to bring bad fortune, the mats should not be placed in a grid pattern, and there should be no point where the corners of four mats touch. The finish is lacquer. The tiny tree was made by Chris Stiles, using manzanita branches, and Chill Cott found it in a gallery.
