Lidded Box
Woodworker: Richard RaffanEven after 35 years as a professional wood turner, Richard Raffan still enjoys the design challenges of turning lidded boxes. This form is very architectural, a walled structure topped by a roof, or lid, with an overhanging lip and a cupola for a knobby handle. The sides of the box are about 3/16 in. thick, and the decoration is a simple double bead at the base. The lid fits loosely to avoid problems from seasonal wood movement. The piece is sanded and finished on the lathe.
