Lidded Rice Bowl
Woodworker: Butch Smuts
Wood turner Butch Smuts of Johannesburg, South Africa, crafted this bowl as part of an American Association of Woodturners project. He was given a rough-turned bowl and was asked to finish it for an exhibit, Japanese Bowls: A Western Perspective. The wildlife researcher personalized the piece with an intricate lid using 18 cutouts and 18 kiaat inlays. Smuts accentuated the keaki grain with black patinating wax. The finish is Danish oil and paste wax polish.
