Mahogany Pencil Chair
Woodworker: John P. McCormackMcCormack’s Pencil Chair represents the two sides of his training as a furniture maker—one of traditional craftsmanship and period furniture acquired at NBSS, and, six years later, an immersion in furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design. McCormack, who builds furniture and teaches woodworking in the Bay Area, describes the teachers at NBSS as “kind and generous,” with “no real separation between teachers and students.” And despite “the conservatism and quirkiness” of the program, “it was also very free.” His chair, made of mahogany and aluminum framing squares, is 19 in. deep by 20 in. wide by 47 in. tall.
