Newport-Style Kneehole Desk
Woodworker: Alan Turner
This Newport-style kneehole desk is modeled after an original attributed to Edmund Townsend (circa 1760s) which is in the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. As on Townsend’s piece, pulling out the top drawer on Turner’s version reveals a hidden writing surface and gallery. All of the carving and dovetails were done by hand, as were some of the moldings. The desk is made of mahogany, with quartersawn sycamore, hard maple, and poplar as secondary woods. The finish is yellow dye, lime, shellac, and lacquer.
