Woodworker: Andy Rae

Andy Rae designed this chest of drawers with inspiration from a classic design by Fine Woodworking contributing editor Christian Becksvoort. The case corners are hand-cut through dovetails, with front and rear stretchers joined to the case using sliding dovetails and traditional mortise-and-tenon web frames. The flush drawers feature hand-cut through- and half-blind dovetails and are individually fitted to the case, with turned ebony pulls tenoned through the drawer fronts and wedged from inside. Leather-faced wooden drawer stops cushion the drawers softly as they’re closed. A fully finished frame-and-panel back allows the chest to stand anywhere in a room.
