Old Bakery Carver Chairs
Woodworker: Tjeerd Hendel-Blackford
Hendel-Blackford designed these high-back chairs with comfort as a priority. He also wanted them to be visually striking and have a sculpted, organic feel. In order to allow the back legs to flow through the design, he used a corner tenon strengthened with screws and plugs serves to join the chair seat to the legs (sometimes referred to as the “Maloof joint”). Hendel-Blackford opted to laminate the back slats to maintain strength with a bit of flexibility. He named the chairs after his former workshop, a converted village bakery. The chairs are American white oak finished with Danish oil and wax.
