Oud
Woodworker: Jameel Abraham
Jameel Abraham based this instrument design on the classic Syrian oud, ancestor of the European lute and guitar. He crafted the back by bending sections over a hot iron and created the edge detail using thousands of mosaic walnut and maple tiles. The spruce face is unfinished, and hide glue holds the bridge in place countering over 100 pounds of string tension. But Abraham says this tremendous tension gives the instrument its deep and airy sound, earning it the title “prince of musical ecstasy.”
