Pencil-Post Bed
Woodworker: Lonnie Bird
Lonnie Bird’s pencil-post bed features posts with simple octagonal feet and a classic tapered octagon on top. Hand-carved lamb’s tongues embellish the ends of all the chamfers. Unlike most beds, this one is designed to be knocked down so it can be moved: The headboard floats in mortises in the posts, the rails are attached to the posts with bed-bolt hardware, and the tester frame on top comes apart easily. The bed, in tiger maple with poplar slats, is finished with shellac.
