“With a bench,” says Gilpin, “you can make something closer to a naked plank. One plank cut into three parts with two joints — now that’s my cup of tea.” Gilpin, as this bench shows, has the ability to combine simple joinery and a modest working of forms, along with beautiful wood, creating a piece of furniture that is not as time-consuming or expensive as larger pieces.
