Shoji Door Screen
Woodworker: Craig Vandall Stevens
Craig Vandall Stevens used one large plank of clear Eastern white pine for these gridwork shoji doors. He chose white pine because it’s light in color and weight. Plus it planes well, making the exacting half-lap joinery easier to produce. The curved part of the gridwork was created by nesting a pair of slender pieces in the same notches at the top and bottom, while separating them at the center rail. The back surface is covered with handmade paper, which is attached to the gridwork with rice glue.
