Shoji-Inspired Bed
Woodworker: Matthew Stark
California furniture-maker Matthew Stark crafted this bubinga and quilted-maple bed for a client seeking a king-sized piece with a Japanese flair. Shoji screens gave Stark inspiration for this design that he finished with lacquer. This bed highlights the modern and Asian-inspired esthetic he developed while learning from other California makers in his early 20s. Stark now runs his own custom-furniture business and works as general manager for Gallery M, a studio that features woodworking.
