Smoothing Planes
Woodworker: Robert Schultz
Schultz teamed up with his brother John, a machinist, to make a pair of infill smoothing planes. The tools are based loosely on plans by Stephen Thomas, using rough castings from the St. James Bay Tool Co. Both planes feature adjustable throat and differential screw blade adjustments that would equal or surpass the Norris. Their planes have silicon bronze bodies and use iron, steel and brass fittings, as well as maple burl and cocobolo. The wood handles and infills were finished wtih oil.
