“The Phoenix” Dowry Chest
Woodworker: Gregory Stoddard
Stoddard refers to this chest as “The Phoenix.” About 30 years ago, an antiques dealer photographed a number of sale pieces. One was a 400-year-old dowry chest with brass images of Judgment Day. Shortly afterward, a fire destroyed everything except the brass and the photos. Years later, Stoddard was given the hardware and was commissioned to reproduce the original. He used Honduras mahogany, finished with an oil varnish, and aromatic cedar.
