Tea Light Holder and Carved Box
My wife requested that I build her a set of tea lights for our dining room table. The problem was that we use extensions sometimes during the year to accommodate extra guests. So if I designed a long unit it would look funny when the table was made shorter or if I made a short unit, it would be lost on the large table. My solution was simple build individual units that can be put together in many different configurations and lengths. I used two different types of wood to get contrast between the part that held the candle and the actual pieces that slip together. Unfortunately they were bought at a trade show and I forgot to write down what they were before I planned off the label, so I don’t know what they are. The joints are simple dovetail which I left a loose to allow easy sliding. The glass globe is a store-bought item and little recesses allows it to fit on the top of horizontals. All this being said and done we realize that now we need a place to store these units when not in use. So I set about building a tea light holder box. Recently I have been playing around with woodcarvings that resemble 16th & 17th century woodblock carvings. So I decided that I would make a box incorporating these patterns. I made the box out of red Oak with an inlay of butternut which was carved. The finish is 2 coats of amber tinted shellac and a few top coats of poly.
