Woodworker: David Hurwitz
The walnut carving on this chest of drawers (19 in. deep by 26-1⁄2 in. wide by 42 in. tall) wraps around from the front to the sides, and fades off toward the back of the piece. On the drawer fronts, the carvings do double-duty as integral pulls. The drawer boxes are ash with hand-cut dovetails in the back corners and sliding dovetails into the drawer fronts. The base is a cylinder of stack-laminated walnut, set back 2 in. from the front edge of the chest. To test his concept and ensure the chest wouldn’t be tippy as a drawer is opened, Hurwitz built a scale model.
