Shaker counter stools

I’d be embarrassed to tell you how little I charged for these. I figured they’re pretty simple, so don’t overdo it. However, because of the way I position the front-to-back holes for the stretchers, the legs had to be turned to a diameter consistent within 5/1000’s of an inch for their full length. Not killer hard to do, but requiring a lot of measuring and paying strict attention.
Normally I would have turned finials on the back legs, but these were made to fit under a kitchen counter, so that was ruled out. Made of cherry, darkened with a couple of days exposure to direct sunlight, then finished with a mixture of varnish, tung oil and boiled linseed oil. Finish applied with #0000 steel wool, then rubbed with soft cloth. Four coats.

Nice work. Don't be embarrassed, I charge $275.00 for the stools I turn without the finial in cherry with one slat. Of course, I always afford an additional 10% of that if the customer is purchasing from us for the first time with the suggestion that they use that savings to make a tax deductible donation to a Shaker community for their on going restoration efforts. It is the least we can do to give back to a legacy that has afforded us a livelihood for 39 years.
