Mahogany and Redwood-Burl Mirror
Woodworker: Mike Ogden
Ogden built this mahogany and redwood-burl mirror (4 in. deep by 24 in. wide by 42 in. tall) while he was a student at North Bennet Street School in Boston. To make the fretwork at the top of the mirror, Ogden first laminated three sheets of redwood burl veneer to create a workpiece that was 3⁄32 in. thick. He then roughed out the pattern with a gouge and finished it with a scrollsaw. The columns were turned, carved, and then split. Ogden finished the mirror with shellac, Danish oil, and wax.
