Ginkgo Chairs, Kotatsu Table, and Shodo Shelf
These pieces were created mainly with hand tools. The finish includes sumi ink, oil pastel (red portions), gold leaf, and amber shellac. The inspiration comes from Japanese cultural concepts such as, Wabi-Sabi and the practice of Shodo (calligraphy). In making these pieces my goal was to create an environment of harmony through a juxtaposition of curved elements in a rectilinear environment such as a Tatami room. I hope the pieces communicate the serenity I feel when making them. A note about the chairs, They are designed to allow the user to sit, in the seiza position or other positions at floor level, comfortably. The post, seperating the base from the seat, articulates and swivels to compensate for the user shifting their weight during sitting.

Those chairs are really cool!
How did you make the joint. It looks like it would break. Very cool.
