Pierced Bowl
Woodworker: Leonard Musgrave; Orange, California
First Place, Wood Turning
The OC Fair Fine Woodworking Competition is held every summer in Costa Mesa, Calif. The 13th annual show last July and August, 2012, had more than 275 woodworking entries. This is one that caught our eye.
When Musgrave became interested in decorating his thin turned bowls with piercings, he bought a small, pneumatic high-speed grinder (similar to a dental drill) and got to work. His 40-yearold compressor had trouble keeping up with the grinder’s air demand, so the piercing was slow going. But he got the effect he wanted. This kiln-dried poplar bowl is 11 in. dia. by 3 in. tall, and just 1⁄16 in. thick. It is finished with a spray sanding sealer.
