Red 16
This 36″ by 30″ compact unit was designed for a combination of display and storage capacity in a small bathroom space. The piece is fabricated from Virola and the exposed vertical surfaces are veneered with redwood burl.
To add a bit of visual interest, sixteen sided columns support the cabinet box and shelving. These were fabricated from built-up 8/4 stock to yield 16/4 pieces. They were then faceted using a shop built table saw jig that allowed precise indexing for each of the 16 longitudinal rips. The open shelving and cabinet top were let into each support column.
Virola is at the softer end of the hardwood spectrum but is straight grained, takes stain evenly, and if well protected it should be suitable for the intended use. It was colored with a mission cherry gel stain, color sealed with dewaxed shelac, and finished with three coats of semi-gloss poly. After about a year of use, the unit is showing no effect of service conditions and has added a new dimension to the space.
