Inside-out Live Edge Coffee Table
My friend wanted me to build him a live edge coffee table with spalted maple. My worry was that the live edge would be too brittle and it would break when he put his feet up. I also didn’t want to lose the grain of the spalted maple table, so it seemed only logical to put th elive edge on the inside. I cut the lumber, a 7 foot board, in half and faced the live edge in with a piece of che-chen in them middle. The legs are walnut and over-lap the bottom shelf, which is spalted beech and walnut. The top is glued on using mortises into the top and tenons from the top of the legs
The whole table was finished off with danish oil and 14 coats of wipe on poly.
Thanks for looking!

Nice looking table. The design of the turned in legs is especially nice. How did you design / cut the center piece of inlay on the top? With the outer pieces having uneven edges, that must have been somewhat of a challenge. Thanks for sharing your work.
Honestly I just but the dado blade on the table saw and cut it out, then used a hand plane and wood chisel to get the pieces to fit right. One end is just short of a 1/4 inch narrower than the other, but no one notices except me.
Thanks for looking and for the thoughts!
Very innovative idea. What a great way to have your cake and eat it too. You get the live edge without the risk of damage that can come with it. Very nice.
