“Matador” (Table with Tablecloth)
I completed this table in June 2013 as my entry for the Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society (SAWS) 2013 Exhibition and Sale. This is a juried biennial exhibition which is open to all Canadian residents. It received the “People Choice” winner during the exhibition ballotting. The pedestal table is black walnut, with a Sam Maloof design influence. The tablecloth is made of solid curly maple, which I ‘sculpted’ on the tablesaw using a cove cut technique. It took some experimenting in order to match the front and back ripples. The name was inspired by the table legs, resembling the bull, and the tablecloth representing matador’s cape. I have seen the tablecloth concept done before but the overall design is my own. I am drawn to studio furniture where art overrides function to create visual delight. Check out the rest of the entries at the SAWS web site SAWS.ca

Wendell Castle did a table this reminds me of. I saw it at a Furniture Society exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts back in 2002 or so. I love your piece.
Thanks Daryl. I would love to see Castle's piece, which I imagine would be spectacular judging from his other works. Bill
This is a beautiful piece. I was thinking about using this technique for something I am making for a charity auction. Could you give me more details about how you did this or refer me to some info? Thanks.
Mike
