Woodworker: Erik Curtis
Curtis adapted this piece from an 1898 chest by the English Arts and Crafts furniture maker Sidney Barnsley. He said he modified the original “until I had a piece I felt comfortable calling my own- though the clear inspiration is inescapable.” Curtis’s chest (18 in. deep by 36 in. wide by 20 in. tall), in white oak with an ebony escutcheon, is finished inside with shellac and wax and outside with Danish oil.
Erik Curtis completed this piece as a student at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine.
