Winchester Tall Clock
Woodworker: Todd Thilges
Thilges started this cherry reproduction of an 18th-century Winchester tall case clock (12 in. deep by 22 in. wide by 96 in. tall) in a class taught by Jeff Headley and Steve Hamilton at Marc Adams School of Woodworking. Thilges made the feet, base, and waist during the five-day class and finished the rest on his own. The clock face and phases of the moon, custom painted by Kay Brown, include the year Thilges was married and a barn to represent his work as a farmer. He finished the case with potassium dichromate to create an aged look, boiled linseed oil, shellac, and lacquer. The clock works are by Green Lake Clock Company.

Great clock! I have a tallcase clock fetish, and this one has all the perfect proportions, lines, and curves. Todd, you've created your own family heirloom! I know Jeff and Steve and know they are both excellent teachers- as is proven with your beautiful piece.
I never tried potassium dichromate on cherry- will have to try that out.
