Dueling Block Planes
Woodworker: David Streeter
These small dueling block planes-one low-angle and one standard-are made of brass and infilled with ebony. At 1-5⁄16 in. wide by 5-3⁄8 in. long, they were made to fit the hand of their maker, who uses them for shaping canoe paddles, among other tasks. When he completed the planes, Streeter’s wife suggested the presentation box, which he made from black walnut. To protect the planes from sliding around, he created a French-fitted look by cutting their shapes out of foam insulation with his bandsaw, then covering the foam with blue felt.
