Scrub Plane
Woodworker: John Eugster
Eugster originally set out to build a Krenov-style smoothing plane, but setting the blade for fine shavings requires a hammer and a long learning curve. Besides, he already owned metal-bodied smoothers that can be dialed in easily with precision. So he made this scrub plane, which is designed for heavy work and for which fine blade adjustment is less critical. Because a scrub plane requires more force to get moving than a smoother, he added handles. The canarywood body is 2-1⁄4 in. wide by 13 in. long. The knob and handle are walnut, the sole is purpleheart, the wedge is zebrawood, and it’s pinned together with ebony dowels. Eugster bought the radiused blade from Hock Tools. The finish is Danish oil.
