Spiers-Style Infill Smoothing Plane
Woodworker: Derek Cohen
This unusual Spiers-style infill smoother is a restoration of an old, beat-up 7-1⁄2-in. smoothing plane that Cohen bought from an online auction site. The original was a coffin-type smoother, but Cohen decided to add a tote (rear handle), which he tenoned into the rear infill portion and sandwiched to the sole. The infill portion was originally rosewood, but Cohen replaced it with jarrah, and made the tote from Tasmanian blackwood for contrast.
