Walnut Shaker Bed
I made this Shaker inspired bed for my 3 year old son. The bed is black walnut, with western maple support rails and slats. I shaped the headboard with a bandsaw and and then smoothed out the surfaces with a spokeshave. I used draw bored mortise and tenons on the head and foot board assemblies, and I used bed bolts for the long side supports. I finished the piece with medium lustre Polymerized Tung Oil from Lee Valley. The bed bolts were also from Lee Valley, as well as the bronze bolt covers. The design was inspired by a photo of The Wedge Post Bed (page 207) in The Shaker Legacy, by Becksvoort. I took some liberties in making it what my wife wanted, but the original idea for the bed was inspired by this photo.
