This coffee table is 18″ tall by 54″ square and is placed into a very large and beautiful great room. The customer wanted the legs to have a lion foot gripping a ball similar to the American period style of furniture with an Eagle ball and claw foot. To come up with the design I made a full scale clay model to get the look that really represented strength like a lions foot.
On the corners of each leg I designed an acanthus leaf with the upper leaves having a wing shape giving the design some extra life. Then on the center of the aprons I used clay to design a similar acanthus leaf and added two scrolls on both sides of each leaf to blend in with the smooth rounded corners of the apron and leg edges.
To give the top some depth and richness to balance with the base, I used a 1′ thick top with a 3/4″ thick top with similar profiles routed into the solid mahogany edges. While matching up to the radius from the apron to the top at the corners of the coffee table adding a three radius corner to set over the top of the legs.
For the top veneer I used a maple burl insert with a quartered Sapele border split by a 5/16″ wide solid ebony inlay to separate the veneers. The ebony inlay has a similar radius pattern as the top edges with a few less radiuses on the corners to flow together.
To give the table a deep rich chocolate color I toned and stained the mahogany and left the center maple burl natural in color then applied a clear coating with a crystal clear finish.
