Sapele and Ebony Cabinet
Woodworker: David O. Wade
President’s Award
While rearranging furniture in their living room, Wade and his wife realized they didn’t have anything to go under their new flat-screen TV. Wade remembered a sideboard he had designed a few years earlier but never built. He used those plans to build this sapele and ebony cabinet (18 in. deep by 72 in. wide by 30 in. tall). It features slightly raised panels (roughly 1⁄16 in.) in the doors and sides. He left the ebony plugs proud to add a subtle detail to the piece.
The Design in Wood exhibition, presented by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and the San Diego County Fair, is held every June and July. With more than 350 entries, it is the biggest show we know of and the talent is superb. This piece is a winner from the 32nd show.
