Sipo and Maghogany Cabinet
Woodworker: Pamela Goldman
Excellence in Finishing, 1st Place
Goldman designed this cabinet (21 in. deep by 51 in. wide by 29 in. tall) to match some nightstands she had built several years ago. She used quartersawn sipo and figured mahogany for the door panels and drawer fronts, maple for the drawers, and cocobolo for the handles. The sliding doors are necessary because the space in front of the cabinet was too tight for hinged doors. Goldman finished the cabinet with an oil-varnish blend.
The Design in Wood exhibition, presented by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and the San Diego County Fair, is held every June and July. With more than 350 entries, it is the biggest show we know of and the talent is superb. This piece is a winner from the 32nd show.
