Derby Commode Chest-of-Drawers
Woodworker: Stephen Kinnane
Kinnane built this chest of drawers (22 in. deep by 48 in. wide by 40 in. tall) while studying at North Bennet Street School in Boston. The design is modeled after Thomas Seymour’s Derby Commode from 1809, which resides in Boston’s Museum of Fine Art. The cutout and cathedral pattern in the lower front apron draws the eye upward. Kinnane used solid cherry for the carcase, book-matched madrone burl veneer for the drawer fronts, and maple, holly, and ebony crossbanding. The top is solid marble, the hardware is brass, and the escutcheon plates are ivory recycled from old piano keys.
