Woodworker: Kerry Marshall

Marshall made the frame of his music stand (12 in. deep by 34 in. wide by 50 in. tall) from French white-oak wine barrel staves and used old growth redwood for the music rest. Marshall, who has practiced Japanese calligraphy for 15 years, wrote the Japanese kanji characters for “sound” and “beauty” in sumi ink on the rest. When combined, these symbols mean music in Japanese.
 
The Sonoma County Woodworkers Association recently hosted its 34th annual Artistry in Wood show at the Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif. Thirty-one woodworkers from all over California brought 57 entries including furniture, turnings, art pieces, and instruments to the monthlong, juried exhibition, visited by more than 3,000 patrons.
