Seven-String Monterey Archtop Guitar
Woodworker: Tom Ribbecke
This seven-string Monterey Archtop guitar, which took the Best in Show Award, was influenced by the proportions and lines of the guitars by great 20th-century New York archtop guitar makers John D’Angelico and Jimmy D’Aquisto. The back and sides are bigleaf maple, the top is Sitka spruce, and the neck is bird’s-eye maple with an ebony fingerboard. Ribbecke finished the instrument with a nitrocellulose lacquer, adding metal acid dye to tint the clear coating, blending the different wood species and giving the finish warmth.
The Sonoma County Woodworkers Association recently hosted its 34th annual Artistry in Wood show at the Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif. Thirty-one woodworkers from all over California brought 57 entries including furniture, turnings, art pieces, and instruments to the monthlong, juried exhibition, visited by more than 3,000 patrons.
