Compound dovetailed box with clipper ship marquetry inlay
This was my first attempt at compound dovetails. It started as an experiment but after having to remake the first joint it slowly took shape and I was convinced that the marquetry inlay would not be wasted. All sides slope in at 10 degrees. I developed the design on autocad to get the required angles. The box is made from 1/2″ thick sassafras. Marquetry woods are spalted maple sky, lacewood water, holly sails, ebony and holly hull, bloodwood spars and masts and holly oval stringing. Ebony handle and ebony stringing around lid. Making the black walnut hinges is another of my first attempts.
The size is 8 x 13 x 6 1/2 h.. The finish is semigloss poly.

Beautiful work. Can you explain how you created the fine lines in each of the sails and the rope lines?
