I came across an incredibly lovely board of Santos mahogany one day, with swirls of vanilla and orange in the grain, that board is what inspired the whole piece.  The legs are ebonized maple with a coat of Java gel stain over the top to soften/warm the black, the rest is Santos mahogany and ebony.  Features double wedged through tenons and a breadboard table top in the primary structure, while the cabinet carcass is hand dovetailed and suspended from three double-stitched leather straps.  Straps are pinned underneath and run through the shuttle style grip attached to the carcass then attached strongly to the stretchers on the primary structure.  Aside from the pins underneath the leather straps are free from the wooden elements and can be easily replaced if/when worn.  The door is hung on Soss invisible hinges and the closure method is two magnets, one embedded inside the lock style and the other in the front corner of the interior shelf.

The entire piece is finished with teak oil and shellac…in the future I will remember to rub out the finish before installing the leather, probably much less awkward that way.

It was a wonderful and fun project aside from fussing with the blacking of the legs around the through tenons, that was pretty troublesome.  Definitely going to make a version 2.0 in the future!  🙂
